Nuclear engineering business Actemium Design UK, part of Actemium UK, has been recognised for the second year running at the 2026 Design Services Alliance (DSA) Awards, organised by the Progressive Alliance. The recognition highlights the strength of Actemium Design UK’s contribution across the Sellafield programme and the expertise of its people working at the forefront of the UK nuclear engineering sector.

The UK’s transition to electrified transport is accelerating, with passenger vehicles, commercial fleets and heavy goods vehicles moving away from traditional fuels at pace. As EV adoption grows, charging infrastructure must scale rapidly to meet rising demand. Yet one critical constraint continues to shape large-scale EV deployment: power.

Actemium UK has delivered a bespoke Mobile Substation Container for a leading UK naval infrastructure client, supporting critical power resilience and operational continuity at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. Developed using Schneider Electric’s Okken low-voltage switchboard platform, the solution provides a highly flexible temporary power asset capable of supporting upgrades, maintenance works and future requirements across the site. The project demonstrates Actemium’s specialist expertise in delivering innovative, resilient electrical infrastructure solutions for mission-critical defence environments.

Working in close partnership with chemical manufacturer Lianhetech Europe, Actemium UK successfully modernised a critical process control system at the company’s Seal Sands facility in Teesside in the United Kingdom. By upgrading an ageing Siemens PCS 7 environment to the latest supported version, Actemium helped improve system resilience, strengthen cybersecurity and futureproof plant operations, all while minimising disruption to production.

Actemium UK has delivered a bespoke low-voltage power distribution solution for a major UK naval infrastructure client at HM Naval Base Devonport. Designed, manufactured and tested by Actemium’s specialist power engineering team, the feeder pillars provide reliable, resilient power distribution in a demanding naval setting while supporting critical operational and docking activities.

Actemium UK has delivered a major structured cabling upgrade, network installation, and wireless network installation at Network Rail's Doncaster Training Centre, supporting the next generation of railway training and skills development across Britain's railway network. Delivered by Actemium's Data Network Solutions team, the project modernised legacy data and network infrastructure across the site, connectivity, resilience and digital learning environments ahead of the facility's launch in October 2025.

Working in close collaboration with the Sellafield Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) Delivery Team, Actemium Design UK provided specialist engineering design services to help transform a legacy facility into a modern, integrated waste processing plant. By combining technical expertise with practical, buildable design solutions, Actemium Design UK supported delivery within a highly regulated, safety-critical environment while enabling safer and more reliable future operations.

As part of the Sellafield Replacement Analytical Project (RAP) – a major programme to aimed at modernising laboratory facilities critical to nuclear decommissioning – Actemium has designed a custom-built modular switchroom. By shifting construction off-site and supplying a fully integrated, factory-tested solution, the business accelerates deployment, reduces on-site risk, increases programme certainty, and ensures seamless integration in a highly regulated and complex environment.

Actemium has supported the Electrical Distribution Network Upgrade Project (EDNUP) at Sellafield since 2018, working within the Infrastructure Strategic Alliance alongside Arup and Morgan Sindall. Providing SQEP electrical design and technical expertise, the business has modernised critical power infrastructure on site – improving resilience, reducing risk, and ensuring long-term security of supply.

We spoke about how she got into engineering, what she’s been working on so far, and why she’d encourage more young women to consider the industry.
