Engineered for Safety: Building client confidence through safe E-Mobility delivery

Health and Safety E-Mobility News Banner

As E-Mobility infrastructure continues to scale rapidly across the UK, delivering projects safely in live operational environments has become just as important as programme speed and operational uptime. As one of the UK’s leading national E-Mobility infrastructure partners, Actemium UK understands that successful projects are about far more than installing chargers on time. It is about completing works safely and with minimal disruption to customers, the public and live operations.

E Mobility Health And Safety Culture Simon Turner

To find out more about the Actemium’s approach, we spoke with Simon Turner, SHEQ Officer at Actemium E-Mobility, about the business’ safety culture, the realities of installations in live sites, and why strong SHEQ performance plays such an important role in building long-term client confidence.

Simon, please can you tell us what the core approach to health and safety is within Actemium E-Mobility?

Health and safety is one of our highest priorities.  It’s embedded into our operational planning, project management and day-to-day decision-making at every stage of a project.  That is because we work daily with high-power EV charging infrastructure in busy public and commercial settings, so planning, visibility and operational control have to be in place from day one.

That comes from both our industrial electrical engineering DNA and the experience we’ve built across the sector.  It gives us a strong understanding of risk, operational discipline and what it takes to deliver safely in live environments.

We’re also not just thinking about our own teams.  Whether it’s a motorway service area, logistics hub or commercial fleet site, we have to consider clients, the public and everyone operating around us – making careful planning and coordination absolutely critical.

In your view, what sets Actemium E-Mobility apart from a SHEQ perspective?

I think it comes down to the culture – that’s what defines everything.

The quality of our work and our safety performance go hand in hand because our teams genuinely buy into health and safety and understand why it matters.  They’re empowered to make the right decisions on site and, if necessary, STOP work if something doesn’t feel safe.  And just as importantly everyone knows health and safety is fully supported at every level of the business.

We’ve also made strong progress around behavioural safety and early-warning reporting.  Engagement across the teams has really increased time and again, facilitated by a new QR-code system that makes it quick and easy to raise concerns or observations directly from site.

That’s helped strengthen visibility across projects and drive standards in the right direction.  More importantly, it reinforces the mindset that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

What are the biggest health and safety challenges when delivering EV infrastructure projects?

Electrical safety is naturally a major focus, especially when you’re working with high-power charging systems and HV infrastructure.

But many of the biggest challenges actually come from the environments we work in.  A lot of our e-mobility projects are delivered at live motorway services or operational commercial sites where traffic still needs to flow, customers still need access and businesses still need to operate while works are taking place.  That means planning discipline and site coordination are absolutely essential.

On larger projects, we work closely with principal designers, traffic management specialists and clients to make sure disruption is minimised and works are carried out safely.

From the client’s perspective, that’s incredibly important.  If traffic flow is disrupted or parking bays are unavailable, it impacts operations, customer experience and potentially revenue as well.  Delivering projects safely while maintaining operational continuity is a big part of the value we bring as a principal contractor.

So how important is health and safety to clients when selecting E-Mobility delivery partners?

I’d say it’s one of the biggest factors.

Clients want confidence that contractors can complete projects safely while maintaining quality, programme timelines and operational standards.  In this sector, that covers everything from SHEQ processes and technical compliance through to audits, reporting, environmental management and overall site governance.

We’re regularly inspected by both clients and accrediting bodies, and we consistently achieve strong scores.  That includes client audits, NIC EIC accreditation, documentation control, environmental compliance and regular site reporting.

Those processes are important because they demonstrate that we have the right controls, governance and technical standards in place to complete projects professionally, safely and responsibly from start to finish.

Ultimately, strong safety performance builds trust.  It gives clients confidence not only in the project outcome, but also in the reputation of everyone involved.

As safety is so important, can you tell us how you keep it embedded throughout the project lifecycle?

Communication and visibility are massive parts of it.

Before projects begin, detailed pre-construction phase plans are developed covering everything from traffic management and lifting operations through to environmental controls and emergency arrangements.

From there, it’s about maintaining engagement throughout the project.  There’s constant collaboration between site teams, SHEQ personnel, clients and supply chain partners.

The key is creating an environment where people feel comfortable raising concerns early and taking action before issues become bigger problems.  That proactive mindset is what helps maintain high standards across every project.

Ultimately, performance and safety are inseparable.  You can’t consistently deliver high-quality without a strong safety culture behind it.  That’s what helps make Actemium a trusted delivery partner across the e-mobility sector.
