Women in Engineering: Ellie Leach
Inspired by her dad’s career in the industry, electrical apprentice Ellie Leach shares her journey into engineering, the hands-on skills she’s developed, and how she’s growing in confidence as she takes on new challenges.

What inspired you to pursue an electrical engineering apprenticeship?
I think my interest in electrical engineering really started at home. My dad works in the industry, so growing up I was always hearing conversations about his work and asking loads of questions about how things worked.
That curiosity just stuck with me. Over time, I realised I wanted to do something hands-on and a bit more challenging. I’ve always liked pushing myself, and I think being one of the only girls here has actually motivated me even more to prove what I can do and keep improving.
Can you tell us a bit about your role and some of the most interesting or hands-on work you’ve been involved in so far?
At the moment, I’m working in electrical installation, so I take what the engineers design and actually build it, things like wiring panels and putting everything together.
Recently, I’ve been trusted to complete full panel builds on my own, which has been a big step for me. That means doing everything from the copper work through to the wiring and layout.
One of the most interesting projects I’m working on right now is a bit different from the usual. Instead of doing the same thing repeatedly, I’ve had to think more about how everything fits and works together. It’s definitely more of a challenge, but that’s what I enjoy the most.
What skills or experiences have you developed during your apprenticeship that you’re most proud of?
I’m really proud of how much I’ve expanded my skillset. When I first started, I was mainly focused on wiring, but now I’ve also learned how to do copper work, which is completely different and requires a whole new set of skills.
It’s given me a lot more confidence knowing I can do both. It also makes a big difference on-site, because I can take on more responsibility independently rather than relying on multiple people.
Another thing I’m proud of is being trusted to work on my own. Being given a panel to complete from start to finish shows that people have confidence in me and that’s been a huge boost.
How has the company supported you in your development and growth as an engineer?
The support I’ve had here has made a massive difference. I’ve got people I can always go to if I’m unsure about anything, and they’re always patient and willing to help.
From day one, I was told to ask questions and just absorb as much as I can, and that’s exactly what I’ve done. I never feel like I’m asking too much, and that really helps when you’re learning something new.
Having that kind of environment where you feel comfortable asking for help has really helped me grow, both in terms of my skills and my confidence.
What are your career aspirations, and where do you see yourself in the next few years?
I definitely want to keep progressing and working my way up. My dad works in high voltage, and that’s something I’d love to move into in the future.
Right now, I’m working with low voltage, but I see it as a really strong foundation to build on. I just want to keep learning, take on new challenges, and see how far I can go.
What advice would you give to other young women who are considering a career in engineering?
I’d honestly just say go for it.
Before I started, I thought I might struggle or feel like I didn’t fit in, but it’s been the complete opposite. I felt part of the team straight away, and I’ve never been treated any differently.
It’s actually been even better than I expected. If you enjoy challenges and want a career where you’re constantly learning and doing something practical, it’s definitely worth it.
