Women in Engineering 2025: Nicolle Lines

Meet Nicolle – Junior Control Systems Engineer at Actemium Automation Nottingham. We recently sat down with Nicolle to talk about her role, her journey in engineering, and the importance of collaboration.
Here’s what she had to say:
Hi Nicolle, to begin with, can you please tell us what you enjoy most about your role?
So I joined Actemium January 2024 and have been a Junior Controls Engineer for one and a half years so far. What I really love about my job is how creative and dynamic it is. Every day brings a new challenge, which keeps things interesting and pushes me to keep learning and improving. Creativity plays a big role here — I get to think outside the box and come up with new solutions. That mix of learning, problem-solving, and innovation is what makes this job so fulfilling for me.
Sounds amazing. As you may know this year’s theme of Women In Engineering is “Together We Engineer”. How does this translate into your day-to-day work?
Engineering is rarely a solo activity—it thrives on collaboration. I work with both male and female colleagues, all of whom bring different strengths and perspectives. Whether we’re brainstorming, troubleshooting, or aligning across disciplines, it’s that teamwork that really drives results.
And it doesn’t stop within the team—we also work closely with customers to make sure our solutions are tailored to their needs. It’s a reminder that great engineering isn’t just technical – it’s also about people, communication, and shared goals.
Engineering is still a predominantly male environment. From your experience as a female engineer, what advice would you give to women thinking about a career in this field?
Speak up, share your ideas, and take every opportunity you can. Yes, engineering is still male-dominated in some areas, but that’s changing. For example, companies like Actemium are now creating supportive, inclusive environments where your voice matters and your contribution is valued.
The right team will back you, mentor you, and help you grow. So don’t hold back—step into it with confidence. Your perspective is needed in this field, now more than ever.
You mentioned mentorship and growth. What or who has helped you in your career at Actemium?
I’ve had a lot of support from all directions—my family, friends, and colleagues. But my line manager, Dawid Falgowski, has really been key. He’s constantly encouraging me to explore new software and learning opportunities, and checks in regularly to support me with whatever I need.
That said, I’ve also had to show up for myself. There’ve been tough days, but I’ve kept going because I’m determined to grow professionally.
Can you please share with us a moment you felt proud to be part of the Actemium team?
It’s not just one moment! I feel proud to be part of a company that genuinely cares about growth, learning, and people daily. Whether it’s working on a project, supporting a colleague, or just feeling heard, that sense of pride comes from everything we do as a team.
Do you have a favourite quote or message you’d share with other women in engineering?
Definitely: “If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!” – it is my dad’s go-to saying! It reminds me that the tough parts of engineering are what make it so rewarding—and that persistence really pays off.
