Women in Engineering 2025: Joanne Elliott

Say hello to Joanne Elliott, Sector Manager within Actemium ICS, who thrives on the challenge of managing complex and bespoke engineering projects.
Hi Jo, thanks for sharing your thoughts on your engineering journey with us. To begin with, please tell us a bit about your role and what you love most about it.
Well, I’m currently a Sector Manager for Nuclear & Defence Projects with Actemium ICS, a highly specialised business within Actemium UK that provides Instrumentation, Control and Switchgear for demanding applications. At present, I am leading a long-term multimillion-pound “build to print” project delivering Control Panels that have been designed by both our customer and our in-house design consultancy business in Chorley – Actemium Design UK.
What excites me most about my role is the challenge of managing complex, bespoke engineering solutions that require close collaboration and constant innovation to meet the highest customer standards. It’s also rewarding to see a project come together from design to delivery, knowing it contributes to something so critical and meaningful.
The theme for Women in Engineering this year is “Together We Engineer”. How do you see it reflected in your day-to-day work?
Collaborative working is essential for the success of this new control system design. It relies on active teamwork, openness, and trust amongst all parties. Whether it’s Design, Manufacture, Project Management, or Commercial teams — both within Actemium and with our Customer’s counterparts — we work closely to share knowledge and experience every day. When design updates are needed due to factors like obsolete parts, manufacturing challenges, or compliance requirements, we always communicate openly to identify solutions, agree on budgets, and adjust timelines together. This transparent teamwork not only solves complex problems but helps us build strong, trusted relationships, which makes delivering the project so rewarding.
On the basis of your experience, what advice would you give to women thinking about a career in engineering?
Go for it! Engineering is a fantastic and diverse field with endless opportunities. My advice would be:
- Complete your qualifications in your chosen Engineering field either as an apprentice or while working in another role.
- Gain ‘on the job’ experience but strive to also understand the broader environment.
- Be proactive and eager to learn, but also take the time to listen and absorb knowledge from those around you.
- Give and seek guidance and support when required – relish time with others as it will grow your knowledge. This may be as simple as to understand another viewpoint.
- Embrace every opportunity to get involved, contribute ideas, and develop your skills. The engineering community is supportive and will welcome your enthusiasm.
What or who has helped you grow your career at Actemium?
I’ve been fortunate to be part of an inspiring, supportive team at Actemium — people who are driven, talented, and generous with their knowledge. The culture here truly empowers you to grow from day one.
One highlight was being nominated for and completing the Vinci Energies Leadership training program. This eye-opening experience expanded my network and deepened my understanding of leadership within a global company, preparing me for future roles and ambitions.
Additionally, the opportunity to attend industry events, network with customers, and connect with colleagues across the UK and internationally has been key to my career development and opened doors to exciting projects.
So how do you and your team support each other—personally and professionally?
Our team is close-knit and collaborative. Professionally, we share resources and skills fairly to ensure the best outcomes, wearing many hats and stepping in wherever needed. We openly discuss project successes and challenges to learn and grow together. Personally, we genuinely care for one another — making time to check in, offering support, and sharing experiences without judgment. This culture of trust and respect creates a positive environment where everyone feels valued and motivated.
Lastly, please can you share with us a moment when you felt proud to be part of a team at Actemium.
Every day is so rewarding – especially when our work is recognised and appreciated by external Customers, Contractors, or Suppliers. Receiving thanks and seeing the tangible impact of our efforts is incredibly fulfilling and reminds me of the difference we make as a team.
Many thanks Jo – we wish you all the very best in your future career with us!
